The shell is Gore-Tex Pro with a 100-denier face fabric, the heaviest and most abrasion-resistant membrane configuration Gore licenses. Every seam is micro-sealed with proprietary taped construction at Arc'teryx's facility in New Westminster, British Columbia.

The WaterTight zipper eliminates the need for a storm flap, reducing weight and potential failure points. The helmet-compatible StormHood adjusts with one hand.

What distinguishes the Alpha SV from cheaper hardshells is the combination of material and construction quality — the Gore-Tex Pro membrane maintains its waterproof-breathable performance for 10-15 years of active use, where budget shells delaminate in two to three seasons. Arc'teryx operates the ReBird repair and care program, handling everything from seam re-taping to zipper replacement and patching.

They also run a used gear resale program. At approximately $800, the Alpha SV is the most expensive hardshell most people will ever consider.

Over a 12-15 year lifespan, the annual cost is roughly $55-65, compared to replacing a $200 shell every three years. The Alpha SV earns its place through material science and construction precision, not branding.
