The Goodyear welt construction is the critical BIFL feature: it means the Vibram outsole is stitched to a welt strip rather than glued directly to the upper, allowing any competent cobbler to resole the boot multiple times over its lifetime. The full-grain leather upper will develop a rich patina with wear and conditioning, and the leather insole molds to the owner's foot over the first few weeks of break-in.
The steel shank provides arch support and structural rigidity that prevents the sole from collapsing under load. At approximately $200, the Apache undercuts comparable Goodyear-welted boots from Red Wing and Wolverine by $100 or more while offering the same resoleable construction.
A single resole costs roughly $80 to $120 and adds another 3 to 5 years of service life. Over a 15-year lifespan with two resoles, the total cost of ownership is roughly $400 — or $27 per year for a boot that fits better every year.
Chippewa proves that resoleable heritage construction does not require a heritage price tag.
