The upper is full-grain leather with a waterproof GORE-TEX liner, stitched to a Vibram Kletterlift outsole using Danner's stitch-down construction. That construction method is the key: unlike cement-bonded boots that become disposable once the sole delaminates, stitch-down boots can be resoled repeatedly, extending the lifespan indefinitely.
Danner operates its own recrafting program -- send the boots back to Portland and they rebuild them with new soles, new stitching, and reconditioned hardware. At roughly $380, the upfront cost is steep.
But owners report fifteen to twenty-five years of active use with one or two resoles, putting the effective cost-per-year between $15 and $25. A mid-range hiking boot at $150 replaced every three years costs $50 per year and generates waste.
The leather breaks in to the wearer's foot and improves with conditioning and use. Danner Mountain Lights are not boots that wear out -- they are boots that wear in.
