Martens 1460 has been in production since April 1, 1960 — the date that gave it its name — and the Made in England line continues to be manufactured at the Cobbs Lane factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, using the same Goodyear-welted construction and air-cushioned sole that defined the original. The Quilon leather upper is finished with a smooth, durable coating that resists scuffing and cleans easily, while the iconic yellow welt stitching is both decorative and structural.
The AirWair bouncing sole absorbs impact through sealed air pockets in the PVC compound, and the Goodyear welt construction means the sole can be replaced by a skilled cobbler when it eventually wears through. It is critical to specify the Made in England line — the standard overseas production uses inferior materials and cemented construction.
At roughly $230 for the MIE version, the premium over the standard line is justified by Goodyear welting, superior leather, and the ability to resole. Dr.
Martens offers a limited warranty against manufacturing defects. The 1460 is a cultural artifact that also happens to be a solidly built, resoleable boot.
