The body is Makrolon fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate with a brushed stainless steel clip and section, creating a seamless monocoque that conceals the piston filling mechanism entirely. That piston fill system draws ink directly from a bottle, eliminating cartridge waste and reducing per-word cost to nearly zero.
The 14-karat gold nib is hooded for protection during pocket carry and platinum-coated for corrosion resistance. Lamy's service center in Heidelberg will replace nibs, pistons, and seals indefinitely, and third-party nib tuners have made the 2000 one of the most customizable writers in existence.
The pen has an active secondary market with strong resale value, regularly trading at 60 to 70 percent of retail even after years of use. At approximately $180, the cost-per-year over a conservative twenty-year lifespan is nine dollars.
Owners on r/fountainpens and r/BuyItForLife consistently name the 2000 as the one pen they would keep if forced to choose. Made in Heidelberg, Germany.
