The anodized aluminum body telescopes closed for packing and extends to expose three standard 9-hour candles that provide roughly 5,000 BTUs of heat along with their light. That heat output is not incidental — in a small tent vestibule, three candles measurably raise the ambient temperature.
The borosilicate glass chimney is heat-resistant and replaceable, the spring-loaded candle platforms auto-advance as candles burn, and the entire unit is mechanically simple enough that there is nothing to fail electronically. Replacement candles, glass chimneys, and springs are all available from UCO.
The lantern runs on paraffin or beeswax candles — fuel technology that has been reliable for approximately 5,000 years. At roughly $45, the Candlelier outlasts any battery-powered lantern because it has no battery to degrade, no LED to dim, and no circuit board to corrode.
Owners report 15-20 years of regular camping use. The aluminum does not fatigue, the glass is a $5 replacement, and the fuel is available at every grocery store.
Technology so old it is revolutionary again.
